Not every movie has to be a well-made one to provide a good time at the cinema. The Hitman’s Bodyguard is exactly that- cheesy? Yep. Dopey? Yep. Silly? Yep. But that was fine by me. It is not at all a quality film but it is probably one of those silly films that people will catch at some point.
This film stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson as a bodyguard and a hitman. There is a story where Gary Oldman is an evil Eastern European dictator accused of a crime and Jackson has to testify him but the story is not really the important bit of this movie and if you look to closely at it… It doesn’t stand up to much. Let’s talk about some good stuff.
This movie is a bloody good laugh. Jackson and Reynolds chemistry is great and they clearly had one hell of a time filming this. In fact, this is one movie where I would love to see the DVD bloopers because of it. A good, fun movie often has good bloopers I find. Their performances were amazing but my favourite character in the movie was actually Jackson’s wife played by Salma Hayek. She is absolutely hilarious and was a complete surprise for me.
As for negatives, yeah, the story doesn’t make a whole lot of sense but, one major thing which actually took away from the fun for me was a bit of the tone. Sure, there are moments of hilarity but there are also some which are incredibly dark and others that are very soppy and romantic. It’s just a little all over the place really.
Wrapping up (because there is really not much to say about this film so it is going to be a short review!), this film is a good laugh, but doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. At the end of the day though, it doesn’t really matter. Get busy living… Unless you like silly films!
